Each year SKA dojos gather for regional tournaments and seniors will observe karateka to decide who will represent each region at the US’s oldest and longest-running karate demonstration which includes SKA’s annual national tournament, Nisei Week. The tournament usually includes both regional team and individual competition. In 2018, Nisei Week omitted regional team competition and featured a field of international competitors for Ohshima Sensei’s 88th birthday.
UNL SKA Nidan Greg Tunink won the Central regional tournament in Memphis in 2018 and 2019. UNL SKA founder Godan David Altman, Nidan Brad Kindler, Nidan Greg Tunink, Nidan Quang Nguyen, and Shodan Lien Phan have competed at Nisei Week.
SKA and international affiliates will also host anniversary events which include tournaments as part of the festivities with team and individual competition. Nidan Quang Nguyen participated in an international tournament in Japan at Waseda University for its 85th anniversary in 2017.
