The University of Nebraska−Lincoln Shotokan Karate of America Club would like to invite Shotokan Karate of America members to our upcoming 30th Anniversary and Central Region Qualifying Tournament event on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21. The public is cordially invited to observe the tournament Saturday afternoon at 3pm. Our theme for the event is “Gratitude”, to express our humble thanks for the many who have come before us, sacrificing and persevering to pass on our serious practice of karate-dō.
SKA Shihan and Godan John Teramoto will be joining us to lead our anniversary celebration practice on Sunday, and SKA Central Region Manager and Godan Bobby Bird will be joining us to lead jiyu kumite-focused practices and facilitate the regional qualifying tournament on Saturday. These practices and tournament will inform who will represent the Central region at the 65th SKA Nisei Week Tournament in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, CA this August. Our practices will be held at the Trinity Lutheran School Gym at 1200 North 56th Street, Lincoln, NE 68504. Here is our schedule for the weekend:
- Saturday, April 20th
- 10am to Noon – Jiyu kumite practice led by Bobby Bird
- Noon to 2pm – Lunch
- 2pm to 5pm – Refereeing practice and Central region Nisei Week qualifying tournament led by Bobby Bird
- Tournament open to public observation at 3pm

We will be asking for a $30 registration fee to cover meals and a 30th anniversary commemorative book. So many of you have generously housed members of our dojo when we have visited to practice with you all over the years. If you would like, we’re excited to have you as guests in our homes, or if you would prefer hotel accommodations we can set you up with recommendations for lodging nearby. If you are looking to fly in, see below for airport information. We look forward to providing a great weekend for all to come together, train hard, and appreciate the decades of shared practice with our dearest friends.
Order one of our 30th anniversary shirts whose proceeds will all be donated to Shotokan Karate of America.
Stay Longer
If anyone is interested in staying in Lincoln for a couple more days, Greg Tunink will be free Monday and Tuesday April 22nd and 23rd to host and spend time with guests. We’d love for you to join us for a regular Tuesday evening practice 5:45-7:15pm in the Nebraska Union Ballroom. Dojo leader and Godan David Altman may not be able to join us depending on his work schedule, but we’ll be sure to have a strong practice and go out for dinner together afterwards.
Hotel Recommendations
These are some very general recommendations, but if you’d like more help finding a hotel, please let us know. If you book a hotel, let us know where in case other visitors are interested in staying in the same hotels to carpool and get rooms close to each other.
- Closest to Trinity Lutheran School Gym
- Downtown by more restaurants and the university
- Close to Interstate 80
Airport Information
The Lincoln Airport is much more convenient with a short drive and short lines, but it only flies United Airlines. Omaha’s airport flies more airlines and is a little over an hour drive away, but may or may not be much more affordable. If you are flying in, let us know so we can monitor flights and coordinate ground transportation.
